چکیده

Datacenter networks and services are at risk in the face of disasters. Existing fault-tolerant storage services cannot even achieve a nil recovery point objective (RPO) as client-generated data may get lost before the termination of their migration across geo-replicated datacenters. SDN has proved instrumental in exploiting application-level information to optimise the routing of information. In this paper, we propose Software Defined Edge (SDE) or the implementation of SDN at the network edge to achieve nil RPO. We illustrate our proposal with a fault-tolerant key-value store that experimentally recovers from disaster within 30s. Although SDE is inherently fault-tolerant and scalable, its deployment raises new challenges on the partnership between ISPs and CDN providers. We conclude that failure detection information at the SDN-level can effectively benefit applications to recover from disaster.

Disaster-Tolerant Storage with SDN

Cloud services are becoming centralized at several georeplicated datacentres. These services replicate data within a single datacentre to tolerate isolated failures. Unfortunately, disasters’ effects can not be entirely avoided, as existing approaches migrate a copy of data to backup datacentres only after data have been stored at a primary datacentre. Upon disaster, all data not yet migrated c...

Software-Defined Networking with DDoS Attacks in Cloud Computing

Although software-defined networking (SDN) brings numerous benefits by decoupling the control plane from the data plane, there is a contradictory relationship between SDN and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. On one hand, the capabilities of SDN make it easy to detect and to react to DDoS attacks. On the other hand, the separation of the control plane from the data plane of SDN intr...

Incident-Supporting Visual Cloud Computing Utilizing Software-Defined Networking in GENI

In the event of natural or man-made disasters, providing rapid situational awareness through video/image data collected at salient incident scenes is often critical to first responders. However, computer vision techniques that can process the media-rich and data-intensive content obtained from civilian smartphones or surveillance cameras require large amounts of computational resources or ancil...
